DESCRIPTION

Set against the backdrop of mid-1990s Russia, *Dead Man’s Bluff* (2005) captures a volatile era defined by the chaotic transition to capitalism and the ruthless rise of organized crime. In this lawless landscape, the pursuit of "start-up capital" has replaced traditional values, turning the city into a playground for oligarchs and corrupt figures. The story follows Sergei and Simon, two low-level, perpetually incompetent hitmen working for the local crime boss Sergei Mikhalich. Their precarious existence takes a turn for the worse when a routine debt collection from a man known as "the Doctor" spirals into a series of botched assignments and accidental killings. As the duo finds themselves caught in a cycle of failure and retribution, they are thrust into a desperate search for a missing case of heroin essential to a high-stakes business deal. Out of their depth and relying on a mix of luck and violence, the pair must navigate a treacherous underworld populated by manipulative police officers and sophisticated criminals like "the Boar." As they face off against rival thugs, the line between business and brutality blurs, and the duo begins to question their loyalty to their employer. With the constant threat of "Dead Man’s Bluff"—a literal game of Russian roulette—looming over them, Sergei and Simon must decide if they can escape the absurdity of their violent lives before their luck finally runs out.
