Thirteen-year-old Sydney Miller’s life in Chicago is defined by the overprotective watch of her father, Ben. That changes when the family travels to Hawaii to claim an inheritance left by Sydney’s late mother: Makai, a sprawling, run-down beachfront property that has been in their family for generations. To take possession of the land, Sydney must commit to staying on the island for two weeks. Upon arrival, Sydney is immediately drawn to the local surf culture and befriends a spirited local girl named Gia. As she begins to learn about her mother, Naniloa—a talented surfer and beloved community figure—Sydney feels a profound connection to her roots. However, this newfound sense of belonging is threatened by her father’s deep-seated resistance. Haunted by the memory of his wife’s tragic surfing accident, Ben is desperate to sell the property to a development firm and return to the mainland. Caught between her father’s fear-driven desire to protect her and her own longing to embrace her heritage, Sydney must navigate complex relationships and hidden agendas. As she attempts to carve out her own path, she discovers that her budding friendship with Gia may be tied to the future of the estate.
