In a reimagined Los Angeles, three years have passed since the arrival of a massive ship carrying "Newcomers"—a genetically engineered alien race once bred for slave labor. While these arrivals have been integrated into society, they remain trapped in a cycle of systemic prejudice, relegated to a segregated district known as "Slagtown." The fragile peace is shattered when a Newcomer officer is killed during a botched robbery. To solve the crime, human detective Matthew Sykes is forced into an uneasy partnership with George Francisco, the first Newcomer to be promoted to detective. Sykes, still harboring deep-seated resentment toward the alien population following the loss of his previous partner, is initially hostile, viewing his new colleague with open contempt. As the pair digs deeper into the minimarket shooting, they uncover a dangerous connection to a series of suspicious deaths at a petrochemical refinery. Their investigation pulls them into the heart of a sprawling criminal conspiracy orchestrated by the powerful William Harcourt. At the center of the plot is "Jabluka," a potent and addictive narcotic once used to control the Newcomers on their home planet. As Sykes and Francisco race to dismantle the drug trade, they must navigate a landscape of racial tension and institutional suspicion, forcing them to bridge their own deep-seated divides to survive a threat that could destroy both their worlds.
